AE | Notas | Carriages, vans and wagons could have 2, 3, 4 and 6 axles. Therefore, the axle-kms. are a more homogeneous measure of vehicle running than the car-miles used in other countries.
The published data on axle-kms. of own carriages, vans and wagons on other lines and lines in construction are inconsistent with the data on axle-kms. of foreign vehicles on own lines. The difference is not explained by haulage of private cars. Such private cars did not exist as they were prohibited. It may be supposed that the number of axles in a train was simply more evident than the ownership of the vehicles in the train.
Totals and sub-totals are only for those railways under the jurisdiction of the National Railways Board. Data for other railways are incomplete and included only in respect of companies that later came under that jurisdiction. |
